"ERCOT's Short-Term Resource Adequacy Forecasting"

Pete Warnken, Resource Adequacy Manager at ERCOT, will provide an overview of how ERCOT defines near-term resource adequacy and prepares its "seasonal assessments of resource adequacy"(SARA) reports. He will highlight the challenges of forecasting generator availability and loads. He will also contrast the SARA reports with other resource adequacy information published for public stakeholders, such as the Capacity, Demand and Reserves (CDR) report.

Mr. Warnken joined the ERCOT organization in February 2013. His primary responsibilities include the analysis of generation reserve margins, preparation of loss-of-load probability and resource expansion studies, publication of resource adequacy reports, and preparation of supply reliability assessments for NERC. Prior to joining ERCOT, he was the Manager of Integrated Resource Planning at PacifiCorp, overseeing the preparation of the Company’s biennial resource plans and associated system modeling and public stakeholder input processes. Prior to PacifiCorp, Mr. Warnken served as a project manager for ICF Energy Solutions, Inc., a subsidiary of ICF Consulting. In this role, he managed the implementation of business software applications for domestic and overseas energy utility clients. Before joining ICF Consulting, Mr. Warnken accumulated 13 years of experience in energy market modeling, technology evaluation, financial analysis, and fuel acquisition planning as a consultant for numerous federal and state government agencies. He has a Masters Degree in Public Affairs from Indiana University and a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.
