"2023 ERCOT State of the Market Report"

Speaker:
Jeff McDonald
Director of the Independent Market Monitor (IMM)
for the ERCOT Market, Potomac Economics

In addition to continuing Market Design changes following Winter Storm Uri, 2023 presented its own unique set of challenges. These challenges included load growth that led to a record-breaking summer, as well as continuing conservative operations by ERCOT. The IMM's State of the Market report includes details of these market developments, including the introduction of the ERCOT Contingency Reserve Service (ECRS) in June 2023.  The report also makes recommendations to improve the efficiency of the market and discusses the changing grid and future needs of the market. ERCOT IMM Director Jeff McDonald will give an overview of that report.

Jeff McDonald has worked in the monitoring of wholesale electricity markets for more than 20 years. He has served as the Vice President and Head of Internal Market Monitoring Unit at Independent System Operator (ISO) New England and Senior Manager of the Market Monitoring Unit at the California ISO. Prior to joining Potomac Economics, McDonald was Vice President of Concentric Energy Advisors and Principal of Libertas Market Analysis. He has a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Davis, a Master of Science in Natural Resource Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Managerial Economics from the University of California, Davis.
