Houston May 2018 Luncheon

“Corporate Procurement of Renewable Energy", Jessica Adkins & Paul McBride, Bracewell, LLP

Over the last several years, corporate purchasers have emerged as a significant force in driving the development of new renewable energy projects. As these non-traditional offtakers become more familiar with renewable energy projects, however, the offtake structures used are likewise evolving to better advance the sustainability goals of these new market participants. This presentation will examine the key offtake structures available to renewable generators when working with corporate counterparties, including synthetic PPAs and intermediated transactions. It will also discuss the primary underlying motivations for participation by corporate purchasers in renewable energy markets, and how these motivations may drive future developments in renewable energy offtake structures.

Our speakers, Jessica Adkins and Paul McBride, together have over 25 years of experience advising clients in the electric power and renewable energy sectors on complex commodity and hedging matters in markets across the U.S. and Mexico. They have advised on some of the most innovative structures in the market, including the long-term wind hedge arrangement named "2016 Commodity Deal of the Year" by Energy Risk Magazine, and Jessica was named to the National Law Journal’s 2016 list of “Energy and Environmental Trailblazers” in recognition of her experience.

Jessica, a Partner at Bracewell, holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Rice University and a J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.  She was also Fulbright Scholar in Spain. Paul, a Senior Associate at Bracewell, received his B.S. in Environmental Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point and his J.D. from Southern Methodist University.
