Houston July 2018 Luncheon
"Communicating the Unthinkable Forecast: Hurricane Harvey’s Rain in Houston" - Speaker: Matt Lanza, Staff Meteorologist, Cheniere Energy, Inc.
Nearly one year after Hurricane Harvey’s devastating Houston flooding, our speaker Matt Lanza will look back on the forecast and share some insights on what he was grappling with in the days before Harvey. Matt will talk a bit about how both Space City Weather handled the messaging of Harvey’s impacts and how a meteorologist fit into the decision-making process at Cheniere Energy. With the approach of the peak of hurricane season 2018, he will also touch on what expectations look like heading into August and September.
Matt Lanza is the staff meteorologist at Cheniere Energy, Inc., where he focuses on how weather impacts LNG operations at Cheniere's terminals, as well as weather impacts on U.S. and global natural gas demand. Matt has 15 years of experience forecasting weather, and prior to joining Cheniere, he was a meteorologist for Deutsche Bank's energy trading group in Houston, as well as at Southern California Edison in Los Angeles. Matt began his career as a broadcast meteorologist, working in the Syracuse and Utica, NY television markets. He graduated from Rutgers University in 2004 with a Bachelor's of Science in Meteorology. Matt also does writing about weather on the side. He's managing editor of Space City Weather, a Houston focused weather blog that served as an information link to hundreds of thousands of people during Hurricane Harvey. His work has also appeared on FiveThirtyEight.
