"Do We Need Different Power Markets or a Different Industry?"

Do we need different power markets or a different industry?

Low natural gas prices and cheaper renewable energy sources are shaking up electricity markets so much that some participants want new rules. But maybe what customers really need is industry transformation to better reflect their desire for affordable, clean and reliable power.

Chris Tomlinson is the business columnist for the Houston Chronicle, focusing on energy, business and policy. Previously, he was the supervisory correspondent for The Associated Press in Austin, responsible for state government and political reporting in Texas. Additionally, he has served as the AP’s East Africa bureau chief in Nairobi, Kenya and reported from more than 30 countries, including Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. He is also the author of the New York Time bestseller Tomlinson Hill.
