Houston May 2017 Luncheon

"Hot Button Topics at ERCOT"

Reliability Unit Commitment and Real-Time Co-Optimization are being widely discussed at both the Public Utility Commission and the ERCOT stakeholder process. What are the driving factors behind them? Why are they issues to be discussed and how do they work? What changes are expected in the future?

Our speaker Kenan Ögelman is ERCOT’s Vice President of Commercial Operations, overseeing Market Operations, Settlement and Retail Operations, and Market Design and Development. Prior to joining ERCOT in October 2015, Mr. Ögelman served as the director of Energy Market Policy for CPS Energy. In that role, he was responsible for managing CPS Energy’s activities at ERCOT and the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) and developing strategic policy. Additionally, Mr. Ögelman served as chairman of the ERCOT Technical Advisory Committee from 2011 to 2013. Previously, Mr. Ögelman worked for the Texas Office of Public Utility Counsel, which represents residential electric consumers in Texas, as a senior economist from 1997 to 2007. He graduated from Boston University in 1987 with a B.A. in International Relations. Subsequently, he received an M.A. in Economics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1991 and an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Texas at Austin in 1995. Mr. Ögelman served as President of the Gulf Coast Power Association’s (GCPA) Board of Directors in 2015. He has served on the board since 2013 and was Vice President in 2014.
